Naruto: a series that sort of keeps having an identity crisis.  What was supposed to be a story about a boy gaining acceptance in a world of ninjas has pretty much turned into the trials and tribulations of one clan with a powerful eye doujutsu...and everyone they come across.  OK, maybe Sasuke really hasn't taken over the story that much, but sometimes it does feel like it even if his story is sort of as important (or hyped by his fans) as Naruto's.  Of course, this week, as another Naruto movie comes to Japanese theaters (and with Sasuke particularly hyped as in this movie), we have to wonder...what would the Naruto world be like if Kishimoto wasn't coerced by his editors to create a rival character?  Would it have lasted as long?  Would it be better or worse?  I can't really say...but I guess its a take it or leave it thing.
-Surprise of the Week: What was formerly mostly the hype going to Double Arts seemed to be boosting Bari Haken this time around...though I can't say if its editorial or just the choice of the fans.  Toriko and Mago continue their amazing early runs as well, To-LOVE is a bit stronger than it had been, and OP finally takes back the top position...though mostly thanks to Naruto being on the cover.  Even Sket Dance is stronger than it had been.
-Dissapointment of the Week: Dogashi Kaden...we hardly knew it.  Its strange to have our first real bomb since the start of the year but them's the breaks.  I just hope Psyren doesn't come towards the same fate.
-Its sort of strange and a bit unexpected, but this week is also the end of the line for "Boku to Watashi no Yushagaku".  Somehow, though, it doesn't seem like it was a bomb from how its ending: series that end in the middle are generally considered successed and completed by both the mangaka and the editorial staff...but I guess if you've lasted over a year and are a gag series like Yusagaku was, that's a sign of success.
-And of course, another one shot this time around, this time for a story about...FC Barcelona?  I know the team is huge in Europe but does it really need a manga about them?
-Next Week: A bit of something for everyone this time around: another cover/color for the eating antics of Toriko, a color page for the second week of the Naruto movie and...just in time for both the Olympics and Jump's 40th anniversary...a special one-shot of Yoichi Takahashi's classic soccer series Captain Tsubasa.  The world's game is really here in a week devoted to the sporting world!

Bari Haken is surprising. No hype, no extra color, no extra covers, no pimping and now it's high in the top ten. No offense fans but I don't trust Toriko's placing yet. I don't trust that it's been in the top five every week since becoming eligible. It seems to be going through the same hype cycle as DA (color pages coming at or near the same chapter, same high placement). It wouldn't surprise me if it started filling in a more realistic position after it's next cover. Mago on the other hand has yo - yo'ed enough that I'm truly impressed. Top three? Wow! I didn't give it much of a chance and left off after two chapters, it may be time for me to read the rest.

Nurarihyon is probably the sleeper of the group: it didn't have the pedigree of Double Arts with the sought-after mangaka, it didn't have the former author like Bari, and yet it seems the strongest of them. (but of course its still early)

You're probably right about Toriko: its probably Jump's feeling to get Shimabukuro out there again after the crap that threw Takeshi out of the magazine.

Hmm...Well it's not like Toriko is bad or anything. Shimaburukuro took a concept that could get tired and made it compelling. I personally like the world of Toriko a lot already. I wish it luck.

I am surprised that Mago is still as high as it is after the Gyuuki arc ended. That was personally the only interesting part of the whole manga. But it was very good. I just wish they could bring in another interesting arc like that. it seems like the mangaka is still trying to find the identity of the manga.

Arts will get better. They are just at a lull. I believe the same thing with Psyren. Once round 3 starts, I expect it to jump up.

I think perhaps that Mago is still trying to find itself but if the arc was as great as you make it, it probably shows some early potential.

And Toriko...yeah, hunting and eating can be done right if the write mangaka does it like Shimabukuro...but the same can be said about pirates, ninjas, shinigami...heck, everything in this magazine :p

That is really badass. I wonder if a serious final arc is starting up.

Gintama's been serious for the last couple months or so. Based on what a friend is telling me, its not in a finale arc yet...but from what's going on, it could be "the last serious arc before the finale arc". (my guess is Sorachi's going back to silliness again after all that's been going on)

I'd love to see Gintama be serious for a bit. The characters are so good that I want to see them in serious plots.

Sorachi knows how to tell serious stories (trust me...though I haven't really hit the motherload in the American releases, he does it even when he's silly) and the recent chpaters I hear have been really, really dramatic with only a minute silly content. But usually when Sorachi goes for a while serious, he follows it up with a cooldown period of silly stories. But as it seems, with several storylines coming into play and character appearances, some are speculating that Gintama is probably one cooldown period away from what could be its final arc.

I am happy for you, Yusha. You ended due to your own free will. I hope Jump gives you an anime short or something. One of the only series to do that in a long while.

Now that two spaces are free in the Toc, I think some series such as Psyren are safe for now. If Jump needs to make any more cancellations, I think it will be Kaden. Then we have Neuro, Eyeshield and Gintama after a while which have endings coming. So I don't think any newcomers need to be killed off for a while. I just wonder when Jump will bring in more new blood.

I'm a tad surprised that Yushagaku is getting an ending in the "middle of the magazine" instead of the bottom. An ending in the middle is a sign of success in Jump terms compared to bottom endings (such as Muhyo, Usagi and Mx0 recently had). I sort of wish I knew what was going on but somehow I'm happy and that the mangaka should return with something better later on.

I personally didn't like his art style, but maybe he can come up with something that is a little more original (And not ripoff another manga currently in the magazine *coughjaguarcough*) >_>

I kind of like Kaden, but apparently no one else did.

It just reminds me of Eyeshield, but the main character doesn't have potential like Sena does. The only way I can see the series ending so early is the main getting accepting on the team.

You're not alone. I've been enjoying it, quite a bit actually. Sad to see it debut so low, even if I kinda saw it coming. Hopefully it can at least manage a run like P2 or Usagi. If it ended after 20 chapters I'd be disappointed; I think I could accept it after a year.

I really doubt it. Usually if a series gets last place for it's first rank, it bombs and dies.

Yoichi Takahashi published a Captain Tsubasa Golden 23 one-shot in the august issue of Young Jump and now another one-shot in Shonen Jump; plus the Barcelona one from Kaji Kimiya. Football (and Tsubasa especially) fans must be very happy ^^

Good ending for Yusha, I think it's the first series in a long time not ending at the bottom of the magazine...

I'm a bit surprised hearing that there were two Tsubasa one-shots this month. Is this for the Olympics or something else? But yeah: anyone who's a fan of Yoichi Takahashi's soccer works are living it up now.

I think so, but I'm not sure due to the "Wish for Peace in Hiroshima" line. Here's the info

Also reading something about "olympic summer" so its probably a bit of both. (wait...isn't Golden 23 the latest Tsubasa anyway?)

I love your commentaries Stranger! Thanks for posting.

With regard to your comment about Dogashi being the first bomb of the year, though - what about Muddy and K.O.Sen? Those were cut immediately, without any chance at all.

It's really great to see Bari so high up without any hyping/whoring, and also very exciting to see Mago up there. On the other hand, it sucks to see Double Arts so low, as it's my favorite of the newbies; I'm confident it can bounce back, though.

When I said "since the start of the year", I particularly meant K.O.Sen, Muddy and Poseidon...all three came out at the start of the year, all three bombed :p But since then we've had the lingerers: Nurarihyon, Bari, Double, Toriko...

Oh, okay. I thought you meant literally, since the start of the year, i.e. in all of 2008. My mistake.
